Wilder Running and Writing Retreat

This three-day retreat is designed to break down writer’s block, plow through running ruts and open women’s eyes to how both of these passions can influence each other. Author and sociologist Marianne Elliott offers her expertise in writing, while professional runner/entrepreneur Lauren Fleshman challenges attendees with run workouts.

My experience: I did not realize how many parallels there are between running and writing before I walked into the gorgeous riverside host house in Bend, Ore. There, writing often served as a creative break between group sessions, and running was a physical activity that we used to encourage and motivate each other. A goodie bag from Wilder’s sponsors, meals from local establishments, time to explore the beautiful city, opportunities to run through the blissful mountain trails and group time to share our musings were only some of the highlights. The weekend empowered each woman to set her own boundaries, both with fellow campers and within ourselves, and gave us the tools to return to the “real world” with more Zen, focus and discipline.

What else you should know: You will meet the nicest people at this retreat. Elliott, Fleshman and Running On Om podcast queen Julia Hanlon, who led great yoga sessions, used an extensive application process to select attendees. I felt immediately at home with every single woman. You will also discover something new or unaddressed about yourself.
