Behind The Scenes: Dorothy Beal Cover

On a steamy Saturday in NYC, the Women’s Running team welcomed the Cover Model Contest winner to the set of her first-ever photo shoot!

When DOROTHY BEAL entered our Skechers GOrun Cover Model Contest six months prior, she didn’t think she had a chance of becoming a finalist. But thanks to thousands of votes from our readers, Dorothy is now a star. On a steamy Saturday in New York City, the Women’s Running team welcomed our winner to the set of her first-ever photo shoot!

SNAP HAPPY

Photographer James Weber shot Dorothy is his personal studio (jamesweberstudio.com). To get the lighting just right, he set up folded foam core, then he instructed Dorothy to run toward the camera. “This is harder than it looks,” Dorothy laughed, as she tried to smile wide, run forward, look at the camera and keep her arms steady all at the same time.

FUEL THE RUN

Dorothy says her weak stomach makes it difficult to eat before morning runs. So after a long a.m. run with Jessie, she was ready to chow down. Luckily, fresh fruit, vegetables and wrap sandwiches were on hand. Starbucks coffee for the team was secured around the corner. “My indulgence!” said Dorothy.

DOLLED UP

Makeup artist Kim Weber (kimweber.com), fresh from working backstage at New York’s Fashion Week, got Dorothy’s hair and skin shoot-ready. When Rihanna’s “S&M” came on the speakers, Dorothy said, “I once listed to this song 20 times in a row to get through a tough marathon. I just kept thinking ‘pain before pleasure!’” Kim laughed and scolded, “Stay still!”

GIRL TIME

Women’s Running’s editor in chief Jessica Sebor and art director Melissa Mellert spent the weekend with Dorothy and became fast friends. To commemorate the occasion, the photographer made the women a special memento to take home. After snapping a Polaroid picture, he put the photo in a hot water bath and transferred the emulsion onto cardboard. So cool!
