Eugene To Host Fourth Consecutive Olympic Trials
USA Track and Field announced this morning that the 2020 Olympic Trials for track and field events will be held in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field. Though Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) in Walnut, Calif., was originally slated to host the 2020 Trials, ongoing litigation regarding its stadium renovation inspired USATF to wipe the slate clean earlier this year and invite other locations to reenter the bidding war. As of late June 2018, the top three hosting city candidates were Austin, Texas, Sacramento, Calif., and Eugene, Ore.
2020 will mark the fourth time in a row that Oregonians have hosted the Trials, each time at Hayward Field. Like Mt. SAC’s Hilmer Lodge Stadium, Hayward Field is also in the process of a significant transformation. The stadium’s proposed renovations, which began this summer and have a projected completion date of April 2020, are expected to boost the stadium’s audience capacity from 12,500 to 30,000 people.
The 2020 Olympic Trials will be held on June 19-28, 2020, just a few weeks before the 2020 Olympics begin in Tokyo on July 24, 2020.
