Here's your mini cheat sheet on what the trials are, who's running and why it matters.

On Feb. 13, the top U.S. marathoners will line up at the start line of the 2016 Olympic Trials Marathon in Los Angeles. Many will by vying for one of the three coveted spots on the Olympic marathon team that will head to Rio to compete in the Summer Olympics. Many will be fulfilling a lifelong dream of simply qualifying to run at the trials next to the greatest runners in the United States. All will get a taste of the fastest field in history—which speaks volumes considering all three qualifiers in 2012 are a) returning this year b) ran under 2:28 four years ago and c) are all in excellent shape and poised to fight for a repeat spot.
