Several NCAA Division 1 teams have the potential to unseat University of New Mexico during the 2018 cross-country season.
Five weeks ago, more than 300 athletes representing more than 20 countries were preparing to tackle a 340-mile route from Santa Monica, Calif. to Las Vegas, Nev. as part of the Speed Project 4.0. Among those participants was a team of 10 women, each of whom Strava selected for the challenge from a pool of hundreds of applicants—including the event’s first-ever wheelchair participant, Mary Kate Callahan. “It’s going to be an amazing adventure,” Callahan told Women’s Running during one of her final days of training. “There are so many unknowns that will be out of our control—but the team aspect brings a really unique perspective to it.”
In the wake of this fourth iteration of the Speed Project, Strava released a documentary introducing the members of its 10-person team—which also happened to be the first all-female team to tackle the route—sharing the bonds they created on their journey and the struggles and triumphs they encountered along the way.
