With the stage set for serious international competition, gear from around the globe finds its way into our hearts, minds and gym bags.

Chances are you’re a runner of the world, even if you do not realize it.

Perhaps your passport doesn’t reflect your international tastes, but your running shoes, T-shirts and shorts likely do. Not only is the apparel from U.S. brands often made in far-flung locations, but companies like Lululemon, ASICS, Reebok and Adidas, to name a few, were all founded outside the U.S., and remain headquartered and manufactured abroad to this day.

Regional running-gear needs are rather specific, and they become even more defined in countries like England, known for its damp and blustery weather. For runners all over the world, the upside is having more choices that work for different climates and conditions.

Plus, if you’re anything like us, you’ll tune in to watch Rio for the sport (obviously)— but the fashion is fun to see too. The international runner essentials on these pages will give you a leg up when it’s time to play “name that brand!”

Australia: Runners from down under like to have fun, and that verve spills over into performance-wear designs.
Japan: Pops of color in more conservative styles are a hallmark of Japan’s running apparel.
Canada: Our neighbors to the north have mad fashion sense.
France: The French bring that je-ne-sais-quoi style to the trails.
South Korea: Bold patterns, interesting cuts and feminine details are fun and trendy ways for South Koreans to elevate everyday style.
United Kingdom: The Brits don’t let a spot of bad weather interfere with a run.
Germany: Clean lines, edgy designs and ultimate performance are hallmarks of Deutschland’s running wear.
Italy: The Dolomites are a runner’s playground, so it’s no surprise this country’s running apparel is proven trail tough.
Spain: Siestas are one way to beat the afternoon heat, but with the right gear, you can set out for some active recovery!
China: The big cities are bustling, which makes looking good—even when exercising—a way to stand out from the crowds.
Switzerland: Solutions to problems you didn’t know you had—like needing compression and cushion at the same time—are the name of the game when it comes to Swiss brands.
