Joan Benoit Samuelson is a marathoning legend. Not only did she win the first-ever women’s Olympic marathon at the 1984 games, but she also held the world record three times, held the American marathon record for 18 years, and won the Boston Marathon twice. Her extensive resume goes on, making her the most well-versed, respected female marathoner of the last 30 years. The day before the 119th Boston Marathon, Samuelson guided a group of runners from Abbott, title sponsor of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, on a walking tour of the final mile of the historic course, offering insider tips on pacing and staying relaxed through the entire race. According to Samuelson, “the most inspiring stories come from the back of the pack.” Follow along with our behind-the-scenes video of Sunday morning’s tour. Video: Steve Godwin
