Deena chats about her plans for Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia and how she gets ready to race!

Deena Kastor is taking on the Rock the Remix Challenge at Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia on September 20-21. On Saturday, Deena will pace the 8:00/mile group at the inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia 5K. Then on Sunday she will race the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. We sat down with Deena to ask her about the half marathon and find out how she gets race ready.

Why did you decide to race RNR Philadelphia?
I love racing the Rock ‘n’ Roll series. I chose RNR Philadelphia for a fall half marathon because it is typically a fast course. Nine years ago I broke the American Record at this race, and I have fond memories of racing this course. I look forward to using the impressive competitive field of athletes to help run fast.

What part of race weekend are you most looking forward to?
Rock ‘n’ Roll race weekend is always exciting. I always look forward to the pre-race expo, but this year I am also excited to run the 5K on Saturday. The running community is teeming with amazing people, and so I like the chance to connect with the other participants. Being connected with others in road racing is empowering for everyone, so I look forward to visiting at the expo and 5K.

What is your goal for the half marathon?
My goal for this race is to run 69:30. Or faster of course.

What’s your go-to race breakfast?
Pre-race breakfast always consists of some carbs and protein. Sometimes it’s a bagel with Trail Butter, and other times its 2 eggs and some buttered toast. The one sure thing is a nice coffee; I prefer French Press coffee, but usually when traveling, I settle for a good quality Americano (with very little water).

What advice do you have for first time racers?
For first time racers I encourage you to think that the emotion you are feeling is EXCITEMENT and not nervousness. That feeling doesn’t go away even after decades of training and racing, so learn now how to twist and interpret how you feel into a positive way. Other than that, enjoy the music and the camaraderie of the running community. I hope you are hooked on this healthier lifestyle!
