Unfortunately race day blunders happen. Despite all preparation, sometimes the unexpected awaits to thwart even the best laid plans. Lucky for you, Women’s Running is here to help you deal with race day nightmares. Check out the advice below for tacking some common mistakes:

Being prepared to deal with mishaps will help you get to the finish line!

You go out way too fast.
This scenario has happened to almost every runner: You look at your watch after the first mile, and you realize that you got caught up in the excitement. You’re way ahead of pace—and way more tired than you should be with miles left to go. The most important thing to do here is to mend your mistake before it turns into a disaster. Slow down to a jog or even walk for a few paces until you catch your breath, then resume running at your planned race-pace.

Your shoe lace comes untied mid-race.
Don’t panic! Make your way to the shoulder of the course and stop for a moment to tie it (double knots!). When you get up again, don’t start sprinting to make up time. Ease yourself from kneeling into race-pace comfortably. You’ll only lose a second or two in the entire process.

Always carry a spare!

You forget your hair elastic/socks.
Rely on the kindness of strangers. There’s bound to be a fellow racer with an extra pair of socks or a volunteer who doesn’t mind sparing her hair tie. If you can’t find socks, smear body glide (or even deodorant!) on your feet before you slip them into your shoes. This will replace the chafing protection that socks normally provide. For a hair elastic,  ask at the information booth if they have any extra rubber bands. Race staff often have a few to spare.

Take care to learn the course map before race day to minimize chances of getting lost!

You get lost on the course.
First step? Make sure you’re actually lost. It’s possible that there’s a turn up ahead you don’t see, but other racers are just around the bend. Ask anyone you see if they’ve noticed racers coming through this way. If you’re sure you’ve gone off course, retrace your steps until you’re certain you’re back on track. You might lose a bit of time, but at least you’ll make it to the finish line! Forget your time, and think about the fun story you’ll have to tell your running buddies.
